Current Program
Seven Stories Institute’s latest initiative to bring books to communities that want and need them is the coordination of Word Up, a “pop-up” bookshop in Northern Manhattan, where there hasn’t been a general-interest, multi-language bookstore in more than a generation.
Sponsored by Vantage Residential and Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and coordinated by Fractious Press and Seven Stories Institute, Word Up will have readings, performances, workshops, talks, and more, with local writers and presses. We hope that the idea of a multi-language, general-interest bookstore in the center of the neighbourhood takes hold and that the space—whether this one, or another like it—can continue through and beyond the summer.

Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) is a non-profit arts service organization with the mission to cultivate, support and promote the works of artists and arts organizations in Northern Manhattan. Seven Stories Institute (SSI) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded as a response to the realization that many good books posing alternatives to current governmental policies and attitudes never reach those most adversely affected by those policies. Fractious Press is a community publisher founded in the Bronx and Washington Heights in 2005. Fractious strives to collapse the categories of author, publisher, and audience through nontraditional exchanges of resources and the recognition that some of the best stories browse on this page buy ssn and dob so emerge when one isn’t intending to create them. A theatrical protest of music, words and movement created and performed by local teens. Inspired by Howard Zinn’s book, A Young People’s History of the United States, and their own life experiences, the young actors have also created a printed anthology which will be available at the performance.
