Current Program

Seven Stories Institute’s latest initiative to bring books to communities that want and need them is the coordination of Word Up, a “pop-up” bookshop in Northern Manhattan, where there hasn’t been a general-interest, multi-language bookstore in more than a generation.

Sponsored by Vantage Residential and Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and coordinated by Fractious Press and Seven Stories Institute, Word Up will have readings, performances, workshops, talks, and more, with local writers and presses. We hope that the idea of a multi-language, general-interest bookstore in the center of the neighbourhood takes hold and that the space—whether this one, or another like it—can continue through and beyond the summer.

The grand opening of Word Up is during the Uptown Arts Stroll.

Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) is a non-profit arts service organization with the mission to cultivate, support and promote the works of artists and arts organizations in Northern Manhattan. One of NoMAA’s core programs is the annual Uptown Arts Stroll, a month-long celebration of arts and culture, which also promotes the business scene and natural beauty of the diverse neighborhoods of Northern Manhattan. For more information, please visit www.artstroll.com or www.nomaanyc.org.

Seven Stories Institute (SSI) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded as a response to the realization that many good books posing alternatives to current governmental policies and attitudes never reach those most adversely affected by those policies. Through author forums, community performances, collaborations with local media, and distribution of books at deeply subsidized prices, SSI seeks ultimately to promote literacy and the active exchange of ideas, imagination, and the written word. www.sevenstoriesinstitute.org

Fractious Press is a community publisher founded in the Bronx and Washington Heights in 2005. Fractious strives to collapse the categories of author, publisher, and audience through nontraditional exchanges of resources and the recognition that some of the best stories browse on this page buy ssn and dob so emerge when one isn’t intending to create them. Fractious has published prose, poetry, and comics in books, zines, pamphlets, auditory flavor packets, secret codes, and more, and annually coordinates small press and music fairs in Upper Manhattan. www.fractiouspress.com
